Own Thinking
Helping children build their own thinking in the age of AI.
The problem
Children will grow up with AI in school, at home, and eventually at work. They need to know how to use it well.
They also need practice forming an idea, explaining a choice, working through confusion, revising an answer, and deciding what they believe.
If AI supplies the finished answer too early, the child loses that practice.
What Own Thinking does
Own Thinking is a guided process. The child begins with an idea. A coach can ask questions, point out gaps, and help organize the work. The child makes the decisions and writes the final answer.
The goal is simple: let AI support learning while the child continues to do the thinking that learning requires.
The process

Start
The child responds before receiving a generated answer.
- 2.
Think
The child explains the reasons behind the response.
- 3.
Explain
The coach asks questions and helps the child make the idea clearer.
- 4.
Revise
The child decides what to change and rewrites the work.
- 5.
Reflect
The child records what changed, what helped, and what still feels uncertain.

The Own Thinking Receipt
At the end, the child receives a record of the process:
- The first response
- Questions asked by the coach
- Changes the child chose to make
- The final response
- A short reflection
The receipt shows how the thinking developed. A polished answer alone cannot show that.
What may come next
The first version is for children. The same approach can later support adults who want to keep more control over their writing, decisions, and ideas.
Possible future work includes writing exercises, reading guides, parent and teacher resources, and a Write First practice for adults.
